Painting with PAPME in a Gorgeous Coastal Garden!

Thinking of You!
Thinking of You!

The weatherman predicted a hot day for most of the southern Maine area, so it was a perfect time to join up with the Plein Air Painters of Maine (PAPME) for a coastal garden paint out. Many thanks to Corrine McIntyre who made the arrangements for the group to visit the gorgeous gardens at "Frog's Leap", the home of Elsie Freeman and her husband. The gardens are extensive and include a Japanese garden, lily pond, coastal views, and frogs. The freshwater ponds they created house real frogs, but throughout the gardens are frog statues and frog garden tiles, and other beautiful objects of art.

I began with my usual little drawing to figure out my composition, but having chosen a statue the composition was pretty much already figured out. The lighting, however, was constantly shifting as the clouds drifted by and the slight breeze made the overhead leaves flutter patterns all over everything. It was clear to me that all my life drawing sessions were about to pay off. So much fun to draw this giant frog and hear people's reactions!!

But, it doesn't end there. Lunch was an chance to catch up with friends. We went to a local lobster pound with a spectacular view of the ocean and enjoyed a tasty lobster roll and ginger beer!
