Signs of Spring

Temperatures are rising and I am getting anxious to paint outside on a regular basis. In the last few weeks, I have painted outside twice. Where I am right now, the lake is starting to melt and some of the spring wildlife is returning. Today, we watched five eagles, two adults and three youths, attempt to catch a young Canada goose gossling. The eagles swooped it repeatedly hoping to pluck it from some open water. But, the baby dunked underwater each time. Eventually, a large number of adult geese swam over to protect it . . . and did! The eagles took off.
Perhaps a more welcome sign of spring is the maple sap running. Cold nights and warm days has produced dozens of gallons of maple sap. The sugar houses are busy boiling off, and 'Maple Sugar Weekend' is about to be celebrated. The old fashioned metal buckets are hard to find, but they are out there. I found a photo from last year and went back to the location to discover this season no buckets were out. So, here is a little study from last year's photo. |
